Chamonix is one of the oldest resorts in the French Alps. Its renowned for its high and vast mountain range that skiers and snowboarders through the years travel to for the adrenaline of exploring the highest mountain in Europe.

Chamonix is located at 1035 m above sea level. The peaks here reach up to 4810m with Mont Blanc & Grands Montets in Argentiere (3275 m)

The Vallée Blanche is a 23 km descent covering a massive 3000 metres vertical drop from the Aiguille du Midi (3842 m), the year round cable car that takes you to the top of Mont Blanc and then embarking on glacial route and experiencing  once in a lifetime experience, beauty and sheer wildness adventure to Chamonix at (1050m).

Depending on the snow conditions you may need to use the Montenvers train to get back to Chamonix town, however with the new cable car that has opened accessing this from the Montenvers glacier is even more easier. 

If you ask a Chamoniard (a person who is from Chamonix) they will tell you the best time is at the end of February as usually it’s a great time with more snowfall and also a little bit of sunshine. Traditionally the snow cycle is ever changing however this is a really key time to visit chamonix.

The easiest way to get to Chamonix is by Transfer, travelling on the A41 its the easiest way to reach the resort.

Due to limited parking access available in the resort, if you travel with a transfer company you can choose a central or door to door transfer and not have to worry about parking or driving conditions.

During the winter months you are usually always snow sure at 2000m from November to May due to the number of glaciers within the Mont Blanc Resort.

Yes there is a great range of ski schools –  one our favourites is Evolution 2 who can cater from beginners to advanced off piste adventures.

Chamonix is renowned for its off pistes however as a beginner, Chamonix does have some great nursery and beginner slope options. Planards, Sayoard and the bottom of Le Tour you have access to magic carpets and button lifts to get your experience. As you start to increase your ski level you can adventure to Brevent, Flerge and Le Tour who has great green and blue option slopes.

Chamonix was the home to the first ever winter olympics in 1924. It’s the 100th anniversary this year with the summer olympics happening in paris 2024 and in recognition of that, Chamonix will be hosting part of the olympic torch relay. 

Yes, this resort has so much to offer non-skiers. You can choose to ascend to the highest part of Mont Blanc via the Aiguille du midi cable car which takes you up to 3,842m above sea level. 

It’s absolutely magic up here to see the vast area of Mont Blanc and even say Ciao to Italy. 

Train du Montenvers Mer de Glace is another must do in Chamonix and this is where you enjoy a cog train ride up the side of the mountain to reach the Mer du Glace (Sea of Ice) this is the longest glacier in the French Alps, spanning over 12 kms.

Whether you visit during the summer or winter, you will find lots of family friendly activities to do here. The town itself has many restaurants to choose from, from easy takeaways to enjoy your in self catered apartment or dine in. 

La Folie Douce also has a great play area for children here, so you enjoy apres ski while your children enjoy the great little play area. If you’re a family Les Houches is a great ski area for beginners so why not look at this beautiful village just 10 minutes by bus from the centre of Chamonix & very easily accessible.

Chamonix is not short for choice, from Airbnbs, self catered apartments, hotels and chalets. There is a great choice in the valley. Les Houches is the lowest par at 950 metres and then you can have a great choice in villages surrounding chamonix such as Les Praz, Les Bois, Les Tignes & Argentiere.

The Chamonix LePass pass opens the doors to all Chamonix ski areas (off the Grands Montets summit) for fun skiing on slopes between 1000 and 2765 m altitude. 

This is perfect if you are choosing to have a holiday in Chamonix for the weekend, however if you have more time it would be worth looking at the Mont Blanc Unlimited pass which gives you access to Swiss, France and Italian skiing. Courmayeur, Crans Montana, Morzine, Megeve and many more choices.

Events in Chamonix are world famous and bring many people together. During the winter months, we see the Kandahar Alpine Ski World Cup in Les Houches. 

During the summer even more events such as the Climbing world championships, Cosmo Jazz Festival, Chamonix Ultimate Music festival, Chamonix Marathon and UTMB are just a few of events that make this resort the perfect year round place to get your Alpine hit.

The lifts in Chamonix are yet to confirm opening for 2024-25 season however it’s usually mid-December to mid-April, depending on the snow conditions the last lift usually closes around the first weekend in May.

The best route for getting from the UK to Chamonix by train is by starting at St Pancras International Station to Geneva Train Station and then onward to Chamonix by either shared or private transfer.

Chamonix is about 99 kms from Geneva Airport, which is about 1 hour and 15 minutes travelling time.

Start by purchasing the Mont Blanc Unlimited lift pass so this area is included into your ski holiday pass or by purchasing a day ticket upon arrival from the information desks if you are using just the Chamonix Pass. 

You can travel from Chamonix by Train to Le Fayet. From here travel by local bus up to the closest ski lift which is the Bettex Gondola.

Alternatively the Chamonix buses have a winter service that leaves the Chamonix Sud Bus Station and goes to the bottom of the Bettex Gondola. It usually takes just over 1 hour, but be advised the services only runs up to 4 times per day.

December usually promises great snowfall at the start of each season, however it’s usually February to March which is the sweet spot for most people as by then the snow has settled and the pistes are well kept. 

Chamonix is known for being expensive however in saying that, it’s not the most expensive resort with others being more pricey; St Mortiz, Val D’isere and Courchevel 1850. 

The reason for this is because Chamonix is one of the oldest and most renowned ski resorts, as well as being home to Mont Blanc.

Chamonix is considered a challenging but adventurous resort, famous for its steep pistes, fantastic background and off pistes to explore for advanced skiers and boarders.

Beginners are more than welcome in Chamonix and there are plenty of options for learning to ski. It’s why the locals say, if you learn in Chamonix you can ski anywhere. 

Chamonix has two low altitude nursery ski areas that are accessible by foot in the town; Teleski de Savoy and Le Planards ski areas. 

Both are great places to learn the basics utilising the button and magic carpets as you master your beginner skills. 

When you feel more comfortable and confident you can explore the green and blue runs at Le Tour, Flerge, Le Brevent & Vallorcine slopes.

Both Courchevel and Chamonix are world class resorts but with very different energy levels and feels. 

Chamonix is located closer to Geneva and has a vast history of Alpine adventures with its world renowned off piste and is home to Mont Blanc. 

Courchevel is located further from Geneva in the Three Valleys, and has traditionally been for those who are seeking a higher level of luxury and comfort while in resort.

The two ski areas in Chamonix that are linked are Flerge & Brevent, unfortunately these ski areas are not linked to Argentiere. 

You will have to travel by the local Chamonix buses in order to reach the Argentieres Ski area of Grand Montets. The buses are every 30 minutes making this more than accessible. 

Chamonix has many bars to visit; from LA Folice Douce to Chambre Nuef with dancing on the tables to great live bands so the resort is definitely an Apres location not to miss out on.

Chamonix is very international, and English is widely spoken across the resort. We do however recommend knowing a few handy french phrases to help you get by – remember you’re visiting France, it’s always good to try!

Chamonix is usually  a very safe town in the evening however like anywhere in the world we always recommend being aware of your surroundings.

The closest village to Chamonix would be Les Houches, it’s a great location for families with young children to stay as there are fantastic restaurants and family friendly ski areas for both beginner to intermediate to enjoy.

Chamonix is located at 1035 metres above sea level, so those coming here from sea level will usually feel the difference. 

If you are planning to explore higher levels with skiing or hiking then it’s always good to have a few days to acclimatise first.

You would have to travel via the local bus to reach the Les Houches Ski area, Bellevue, or Prarion lifts. The buses are every 30 minutes making this area easily accessible from Chamonix. 

Yes, ice climbing is available in Chamonix to enjoy, with the best time for this activity being between December to February. 

There are ice falls located all over the valley with the most well known being at the Col des Montets, Argentiere, Les Houches and Servoz.

If you want to sound like a local, the resort is known as “Cham”. Another favourite nickname is the European Capital of Extreme Sports.

At a resort level there can be times when the weather is fickle. The ski areas, however, are located nice and high where snow conditions are generally reliable and great for skiing throughout the winter season.

Chamonix off pistes are something that is a once in a lifetime opportunity to enjoy and explore. As many of the areas are not sign posted or patrolled, we would always recommend you hire a local guide for safety. This also gives you the best opportunity to make the most of your time in Chamonix.

Due to the natural configuration of the glaciers, the classic route of the Vallée Blanche is not very steep and can be more challenging for snowboarders. Several steeper variants (Petit et Moyen Envers du Plan for example) are better adapted for snowboarders and usually recommended.

To get to Les Houches from Chamonix you can use the local Chamonix buses, the number 1 is your best option. 

The Chamonix bus system is also linked up with helpful live tracking and all you have to do at the bus stop is scan the QR code to view the next bus heading to Les Houches. 

During the winter months, extra ski buses direct from Chamonix Sud to Prarion are put on to help cover the busy times making getting around easy and quick. 

To get to Flerge from Chamonix the best way is by the local buses, with the number 1 being the best option. 

The Chamonix bus system is now linked up with live tracking so all you have to do at the bus stop is scan the QR code to view the next bus heading for Les Praz, to access the Le Flerge lift. 

During the winter months, extra ski buses direct from Chamonix Sud to Prarion are put on to help cover the busy times making getting around easy and quick.
