The resort of Tignes can be found in the stunning Tarentaise Valley in the heart of the French Alps. Covering an extremely vast area, Tignes is well-known for the variety of pistes that visitors can enjoy. 

In fact, it also provides guests with one of the longest ski seasons in the whole of Europe, meaning the slopes can be enjoyed at most times of the year. Along with the neighbouring resort of Val d’Isere Tignes is based in the Tignes- Val d’Isere ski region where over 300km of pistes are just waiting to be explored. 

Furthermore, it is hidden away in the depths of the Alps’ mountains, meaning no matter what part of the resort you’re traversing, the remarkable mountain views will always be enjoyed.  

Just above Tignes is the Grande Motte Glacier, and guests are able to take a trip to the top where 360-degree views of the entire French Alps await. 

If altitude is what you’re looking for from a ski resort, then Tignes is a great choice for you. The ski area reaches a staggering 11,300 feet high making it one of Europe’s highest resorts. 

The village itself can be found at between 5,085 feet and 6,890 feet with the highest peak, the iconic Grande Motte glacier, standing at 11,338 feet. 

As previously mentioned, the Tignes-Val d’Isere region comprises a wide range of different slopes that are all located at different levels. There is a maximum height difference of 6,253 feet, meaning there is something for everyone.    

Another part of every skiing trip that needs organising is getting to and from the resort itself. Unlike some holidays, a skiing trip usually involves the need to travel larger distances as the slopes are located, understandably, located in rural mountain areas that are not always located close to cities or airports. 

Fortunately, Tignes is one of the easier resorts to get to, and it takes around two hours and 40 minutes to reach it from Geneva Airport. Instead of doing that trip on your own, it’s always recommended you get a transfer. 

This is because transfers regularly move people to and from the airport, negating your need to attempt a tricky journey yourself and making the whole process easier.

The prime skiing season in Tignes typically runs from late November to early May. However, the exact timing can vary depending on snow conditions.

Tignes is accessible by road and is well-connected to major airports. Regular private and shared transfers are available from Chambery Airport, Geneva Airport and Lyon Airport. Shuttle services and taxis are available for transfers from airports to the resort.

Tignes is one of the highest ski resorts in Europe and sits at over 2,100 metres, so it’s important to stay hydrated and acclimatise slowly especially for those from places with a lower altitude.

Due to the variety of skiing areas that Tignes has to offer, it’s arguably one of the best resorts in the Alps for beginners. 

As mentioned earlier, it has a variety of green (easy) runs which can help people get to grips with the skill before progressing onto blue (intermediate) runs if they feel confident. In addition to this, both Val Claret and Le Lac feature designated learning zones where rookies are able to practise and get to grips with core skills before taking to the slopes themselves. 

Once you’ve mastered the basics and want to move on from green runs, the Grattula chair run is a good blue run that isn’t as challenging as some others. 

Ski schools are also on offer if you’d like some guidance from an expert.  

Absolutely! Tignes offers various activities if skiing or snowboarding isn’t for you. From ice diving to husky sledding, paragliding and helicopter rides, there’s something for everyone.

No matter what time of year you visit, Tignes is an extremely family-friendly choice. The resort features a wide range of family activities and amenities including kid-friendly restaurants, events and even child-care options if you would like some time to yourself. Wherever you stay in the region is likely to be a good choice, but consider your priorities. Think about the distance to the pistes, amenities you may require as well as whether you want a quiet place or would prefer to be in the bustling apres-ski areas.    

Le Lac is one of the liveliest parts of Tignes whereas Les Brevieres is a bit quieter but still has plenty to see and do.

Yes, the Espace Killy ski pass covers Tignes and neighbouring ski resorts such as Val d’Isère and provides access to a vast network of ski slopes and lifts.

You’d be glad to know that Tignes receives a great amount of snow each season. You can expect around 600cm to fall on an annual basis. This is another reason why the resort is regarded as one of the most popular in the Alps and Europe as a whole. 

Tignes is based in the Espace Killy area making it one of France’s most reliable snow sure resorts from early December to May.

Tignes is based at 1810m with skiing available over the two beautiful resorts of Valdsers and Tignes which is 3456m making it absolutely perfect for reliable snowfall and ensuring great coverage for the whole of the winter season.

Tignes is one of the best resorts to ski and explore during the peak season from end of November to April. If conditions are favourable, the season can even be extended through to May. 

During the summer season you can ski the Grande Motte glacier which has slopes at altitudes of nearly 3000m. These are accessible during the months of June, July and August making Tignes a year round ski resort. 

Tignes and Val D’isere are both great snow sure resorts with two different styles throughout the villages. 

Val D’isere is a more traditional Alpine village with wooden chalets and is usually more expensive than Tignes. 

Tignes, however, is a purpose built ski resort with more apartment style accommodation available. The beauty of these two resorts is that doesnt matter which you choose, you can still ski both areas on your ski holiday thanks to the fantastic lift system between them.

Tignes is recognised as a great resort for beginner and intermediate pistes, a wide choice of pistes terrain and off pistes that are easier than other resorts. Skiers and snowboarders alike love Tignes for its plethora of choices. 

Our favourite pistes is the ski run from the Grand Motte Glacier all the way down to Val Claret.

Tignes is made up of 5 villages. Val Claret is the highest village at 2100m followed by Le Lac, Lavachet, Les Brevieres and lowest point of Tignes; 1800 – Les Boisses. All of which are great areas to stay in for when visiting Tignes. 

As Tignes was a purpose built ski resort, it has more apartments and hotels available over the chalet style luxury market, however we see a growing trend towards an increase in luxury accommodation options.

Depending on what you’re looking for, may also sway you to one of the villages that make up the resort:

• Les Brévières: Has the traditional alpine village feel
• Tignes 1800: The newest and most modern part of the resort that is becoming more popular each season.
• Tignes le Lavachet: Located just 10 minutes from the centre with a typical hotel or apartment style accommodation.
• Tignes Le Lac: Located in the heart of the Tignes resort, with hotel and apartment style options, in addition to plenty of bars and restaurants to enjoy too.
• Tignes Val Claret: Where most of the Ski in, Ski out properties are located and of course we cannot forget a great night lift up here too. 

No, Tignes isn’t higher than Val Thorens, but it comes a very close second, with only 200m of altitude difference but both resorts still have great altitudes with snow sure conditions.

Tignes is famous for being a snow-sure resort and always boasts a great atmosphere during the winter months. 

It’s really easy to ski from Tignes to Val D’Isere. Start by taking the Toviere Lift to Edelweiss pistes and then follow it through to the Marmottes lift. From here you can start your descent down to Val D’Isere via a rather famous advanced ski run, so make sure you take a little rest before starting as it can be rather icy and mogly at times. 

When you’ve reached the bottom you will be in the Solaise area and just a quick journey on the olympic lift will see you in Val D’isere.

Tignes has an awesome apres scene and you will be spoiled for choice from bars on the pistes to bars in towns. Happy hour is never far away and always good fun. – One of our favourites is Loop Bar –  you definitely don’t want to miss the fun to be had here. 

Tignes is known to be moderately priced for a ski-resort, especially in comparison to its sister resort; Val D’Isere.

A beer in Tignes is usually between €4-8 EUR but it’s always worthwhile checking out happy hours to get the best deals, there is always something on which is perfect for those travelling on budget.

Both Tignes and Val D’Isere are fabulous as they are connected by the lift system.

Traditionally the accommodation types in Tignes are more apartment styled and lighter on the holiday budget whereas Val D’Isere offers more ski in and ski out chalet style holidays that are more luxurious.

Tignes has a few different offers around airports to fly into. For those looking for the lowest priced airfares, we usually find Geneva Airport is the most affordable option with lots of shared transfer services available from here.

Lyon and Grenoble Airports are also great options, however the frequency of shared shuttles from here may not be available 5 days a week which means you’ll need to travel via private transfers to reach your destination.

Travelling to Tigne is roughly 3 hours 45 minutes from Geneva Airport. Depending on the day of travel it may take longer. 

Be aware that on Saturdays traffic tends to be the busiest, increasing transfer times. Travelling on Sunday however, is less congested.

Val d’Isere is the closest town to Tignes, approximately a 20 minutes drive between the two resorts.

Tignes sits between 1800-2100m of altitude across the villages with ski lifts ascending to 3200m, so it’s possible you may not have been this high before. We always recommend being cautious if this is your first time travelling to Tignes as you can get altitude sickness.

Bourg Saint Maurice is the closest train station to Tignes. From here you can take local buses to reach Tignes. 

Please be mindful these usually only operate during the day.

Tignes Val Claret is the highest of the five villages that make up the Tignes ski resort as it is located at 2100m. 

That’s why Val Claret has a lot more ski in, ski out properties to choose from.

Like Val Thorens, Tignes is a high-altitude resort (between 1,550 and 3,456 metres). In summer, you can ski on glaciers and see Mont Blanc. As a result, it also opens very early and closes extremely late: The ski season in Tignes is from late November to early May, with guaranteed snow until April.

Tignes has a great range of restaurants with a variety of food available from vegetarian favourites to burgers, pizzas and traditional french cuisines. 

There are plenty of options available on the mountain too and one of our favourites is dining at Le Panoramic on a mountain day. Dining with a view is a real treat. 

The Tignes resort has local buses that operate throughout the summer and winter seasons. 

Please be aware they usually operate between 7am and 11pm.
