Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, also known as Chamonix, is a gorgeous resort in the French Alps that is popular among skiers.
This beginner’s guide will cover everything you need to know about skiing in Chamonix for beginners. Keep reading until the end, as we will also answer some of the most frequently asked questions. Let’s get started!
Is Chamonix Good for Beginners?
Chamonix is considered the ultimate luxury ski destination. That said, is it a good place for beginners looking to get some skiing action?
Due to its challenging skiing and range of off-piste routes, Chamonix is an international destination for extreme snow sports. The terrain is best left to experts, as beginners might find it incredibly difficult to navigate.
However, there are safer slopes that newbies can explore, such as the ones at the north end of the valley to the Domaine de Balme.
Where Is Chamonix?
Chamonix is located on the east side of France, just below Lake Geneva. This stunning skiing resort is at the foothills of Mont Blanc, one of the tallest mountains in Europe.
How to Get to Chamonix
There are several transportation options you can consider for Geneva to Chamonix transfers, and these include the following:
- Car (via the Swiss Autoroute or through the Center of Geneva)
- Train
- Bus
While public transportation might be a cost-effective option for visitors looking to travel to Chamonix, it can take a lot of time. You’ll also have to plan according to the bus schedules.
Avoid all the hassles and choose shared, private, or premium transfers from Geneva Airport with Alpine Fleet. It runs high-frequency shuttle services and offers excellent value for money.
Beginner Ski Areas in Chamonix
While Chamonix is renowned for extreme skiing, there are a few places in town that beginners can explore, and these include the following:
Le Savoy Nursery Ski Area
While Chamonix is renowned for extreme skiing, there are a few places in town that beginners can explore, and these include the following:
Les Planards Beginner Ski Area
With drag lifts and a gentle gradient green piste, Les Planards is the larger of the two nursery areas. It allows you to build confidence before moving to the steeper blue piste or red run.
Beginner Ski Areas in Brévent and Flégère
If you’re taking the Planpraz cable car to the Brévent and Flégère ski area, there are four green pistes for you to practice on.
Beginner Slopes at Brévent
Once you exit the gondola, take the “Funi 2000” funicular to the green piste, commonly called the “Verte 2000.” The Retour Plan Praz is also a beginner-friendly slope that takes you back to the cable car.
Beginner Slopes at Flégère
There are two gentle green pistes at Flégère that beginners should try: the “Trappe” and “Libellules.”
Beginner Areas in Argentière
For newbie skiers or snowboarders looking to practice in Argentière, Les Chosalets is the perfect place to start. Once you’ve got the hang of it, you can move on to Grands Montets.
Les Chosalets (Argentière)
Head over to the snowshoe and cross-country ski trails to access the Les Chosalets nursery area. Here, there are two slopes (short and long) for you to practice on.
Beginner Areas in Les Houches
Les Houches has gentle, undulating slopes, making it a great place to learn how to maneuver.
Les Houches
There are three nursery ski areas in Les Houches, but we highly recommend exploring Le Tourchet gradients, which you can find in the center of the town. When you’re done skiing, there are many bars and restaurants you can visit.
Beginner Areas in Le Tour
At the far end of the Chamonix valley, you’ll find the Le Tour village and ski area. It’s accessible by a bus, car, or the Vallorcine gondola.
La Vormaine (Le Tour)
Le Tour has many areas to practice and get a feel of the terrain. The slopes at the foothills are gentle, while those higher in the mountain can be challenging to navigate. You can take a gondola instead of doing the red home run piste back to the bus stop when you’re done.
We Do Not Recommend Le Grands Montets for Beginners
Le Grands Montets is not a place for beginners. It can be tricky to navigate, even for experienced skiers. Plus, there may be many enthusiasts skiing in this area, which can increase the risk of collisions.
Beginner Ski Lessons
There are many different skiing schools, such as the ESF Ecole Ski Français and ESF Argentière, that provide detailed lessons to children and adults who want to learn how to ski.
Depending on your ability, skills, and interests, the instructor may guide you to a suitable program.
The following are the different types of ski passes available:
- Mont Blanc Unlimited Pass: This covers all of the Chamonix areas, including the slopes that are perfect for beginners.
- Chamonix Le Pass: If you prefer to stay on groomed runs, this pass may be the right one for you. It gives you access to Brévent-Flégère, Balme (Le Tour-Vallorcine), Grand Montets, and the valley floor beginner areas.
- Les Houches Pass: This pass is ideal for families and beginners, as it provides access to 31 km of groomed pistes in the Les Houches resort.
Although Chamonix is a great place to ski, its reputation is built on off-piste skiing. There are no markers and many different hazards that skiers must navigate.
If you’re a beginner, it’s best to check out the three valleys in the area for a more relaxed experience.
There are many local ski schools in Chamonix that offer lessons and guidance, some of which include the following:
- ESF Ecole Ski Français
- ESF Argentière
- Chamonix Sport Aventure (CSA) Ski School
- Ecole Ski Français
- Freedom Snowsports Accredited Ski & Snowboard School

Beginners should consider taking skiing lessons in Chamonix for several reasons, including learning more about the terrain, honing their skills, and gaining muscle memory for precision maneuvering.
Chamonix is much more than a skiing resort. If you’re a non-skier, there are many things to do, such as riding a husky sled, visiting a spa for relaxation, enjoying food or coffee with picturesque views, and many more. That said, you may need to buy a pedestrian lift pass.
There are plenty of places for beginners in and around Chamonix, including the following:
- Les Planards Ski Resort
- Le Savoy in Chamonix
- La Vormaine in Le Tour
- Les Chosalets in Argentière
- La Poya in Vallorcine
The Chamonix ski area spans five distinct locations along the valley. While the town sits at an elevation of 1,080 meters, the highest lift reaches over 3,800 meters. This region of France offers avid skiers some of the world’s finest off-piste opportunities and incredible vertical drops.
