Many visitors choose to fly to Geneva Airport in Switzerland, Chamonix’s nearest airport. Located just 55 miles away, it only takes around one hour and 30 minutes to reach the resort from this major airport.

It serves as a primary gateway for most international travellers heading to the resort with frequent flights arriving regularly from international airlines, a wide range of onward travel options available and a relatively short transfer time.
It is possible to use other airports like Lyon, but you can expect longer transfer times.
How to get to Chamonix

Flights & airport transfers to Chamonix
As mentioned above, the closest international airport to Chamonix is Geneva Airport in Switzerland. It is about 55 miles away and one of the most well-connected cities in the world.
Due to its great links, many visitors from the UK and across Europe use Geneva to get to Chamonix. Other airports within driving distance include Lyon, Turin and Milan but Geneva is by far the most convenient.

From Geneva, take a train to Saint-Gervais-les-Bains-Le Fayet. This is the main gateway to the Mont Blanc region. Then, you can get on the Mont Blanc Express train that runs directly to Chamonix and offers a picturesque ride through alpine valleys and mountain villages. The total journey takes around 3 hours.
If you’re coming from Paris, take a high-speed TGV train to Annecy or Saint-Gervais and then hop on the Mont Blanc Express.
Drive to Chamonix
Driving to Chamonix gives you the flexibility to explore the region at your own pace, but does come with its own challenges especially if you’re unfamiliar with the route.
From Geneva, you will need to take the A40 motorway, known as the Autoroute Blanche, which leads you directly to Chamonix. However, the wintery weather conditions can make it difficult and you should be prepared for tolls along the highways.
During the winter months, your car must have snow tyres or chains to handle the unpredictable weather.
Coach / bus to Chamonix
For budget-conscious travellers, coach and bus services are a practical way to get to Chamonix.
Several companies offer routes from Geneva, Lyon and other nearby cities.
From Geneva, regular buses run from the airport and go directly to Chamonix with a slightly longer travel time of around 2 hours. These services are relatively cheap compared to other options but you need to check routes ahead of time.
From Paris and other major cities, long-distance bus companies offer routes to Chamonix but these journeys can take several hours and will likely require changes.
