Where is Les Menuires?
Situated in the heart of the French Alps, Les Menuires can be found at the centre of one of the world’s biggest ski areas – the 3 Vallees ski area. Offering unrivalled snow cover and a skiing experience that is hard to find anywhere else in the world, visitors to this resort can seamlessly glide through any of the area’s three resorts – Les Menuires, Saint Martin de Belleville and Val Thorens. Ski lifts and a free shuttle service operate every day of the week so visitors can sample a versatile range of skiing options. Other activities are available if you want a break from the skiing, with hiking and mountain bike trails also proving popular.
It’s fair to say that the resort has changed quite dramatically over the years, and it hasn’t always been free of controversy.
In 1964, France’s President Georges Pompidou introduced a new policy that involved building ski resorts in the country’s mountains. The purpose was to create a place for the middle class to ski and enjoy a range of leisure activities, and this initially caused controversy among local residents and those who thought the mountains should be left undisturbed.
These days, however, skiing and tourism are one of the region’s biggest money-makers with thousands of visitors from all over the world heading to the resort each year. Not only is it recognised for its great skiing options but it also has architectural acclaim and many of the buildings that were once frowned upon are now revered.
Best ways of getting to Les Menuires
Many visitors fly into Switzerland’s Geneva Airport on their way to Les Menuires, and if you’re wondering how to get to Les Menuires from Geneva we’re here to help.
In the following sections, we’ll examine the best way you can get to the resort.
Flights & Airport transfers to Les Menuires
Unless you live very locally, you’ll almost certainly have to fly into an airport first.
Les Menuires’ nearest airport is Chambery and it takes around one hour and 30 minutes to drive to the resort. Grenoble Airport is the next closest with a travel time of around two hours and 15 minutes. However, both airports are not particularly large and therefore have fewer international flights.
Therefore, while it is not Les Menuires’ closest airport, Geneva Airport is perhaps the most popular choice to fly into as it is bigger and more flights head to the Swiss city.
Once you’ve flown into Geneva, your best bet is to then use a transfer to get to Les Menuires.
At Alpine Fleet, we provide both private and shared transfers to the resort.
Your choice of transfer will depend on your preferences but options can get you to Les Menuires in comfort and style.
Our private transfer option will provide you with exclusive access to one of our vehicles. You’ll be met by our driver in arrivals, and you’ll then be driven directly to the accommodation at the resort and you can enjoy the beautiful views along the way.
Alternatively, our shared options follow much the same journey as the private transfers, with the only difference being you’ll share a vehicle with others who are going to the same place. The journey will stop off at a range of neighbouring resorts, and once you reach Les Menuires you can also use our door to door service that will see you pop into a private vehicle for the last mile or so to get you directly to your accommodation.
Train to Les Menuires
If you want to travel by rail, the nearest train station to Les Menuires is Moutiers (sometimes referred to as Moutiers-Salins-Brides Les Bains on timetables).
You can get direct trains to the station from Paris, but indirect trains can also be taken so long as you change at Chambery, Aix Les Bains or Lyon. If you’re travelling from the UK, you can take the Eurostar to Paris before getting onto another train that can take you to Moutiers. Bear in mind that despite being the nearest train station to the resort, it is still a 40 minute drive or taxi away.
Drive to Les Menuires
You can hire a car from all airports.
As mentioned earlier, Chambery is the closest airport to Les Menuires and it’ll take just one hour and 30 minutes to drive there. If you fly into the more popular Geneva Airport, you can expect it to take approximately two hours and 30 minutes to drive.
However, you should only opt for this option if you’re a confident driver as the unfamiliar mountain roads in the Alps can be challenging.
Coach / bus to Les Menuires
There is a public bus service from Geneva, Chambery and Lyon airports to Les Menuires.
Focusing on Genevea, there are normally three buses a day during the week with seven on Saturday and four on Sundays. Usually, the journey will take about three and a half hours and will include a stop at Moutiers where you will need to change.
